What type of charger do I need?

This depends on the electric vehicle you have: manufacturers use a variety of charger connections, but the main three are:

  • Type 1

  • Type 2

  • CSS

Some vehicles accept multiple connection types, such as the Nissan Leaf. We always recommend checking your vehicle manual to confirm which is required.

Should I buy tethered or untethered

A 'tethered' connection is a unit which comes with an attached cable, saving you the hassle of digging it out and attaching it every time you want to charge. You will need to ensure it is long enough to reach your car, and you may find it limits which EVs you can buy in the future (depending on the connection type).

'Untethered' units offer more flexibility, but you will have to supply your own cable (most new EVs come with these, or as an optional extra). They can also look neater.

How fast do I need to charge?

This will depend on your budget and personal requirements. 'Slow charge' 3KW chargers are cost effective and good for overnight charging. 'Quick charge' 7KW are great for busy lifestyles and day charging.

Faster chargers are available, but require a 3-phase electrical connection (usually seen in commercial properties), which most homes do not have.
